Say no to tar sands

BP is about to make a big investment in the tar sands of Canada. Far from being “Beyond Petroleum”, this would be a massive oily step backwards. Tar sands are the most polluting and destructive means of producing petrol in commercial production.

Extracting tar sands from the ground and getting it to the petrol pump creates three times as much greenhouse gas emissions as the same amount of conventional oil. An area in Canada, the size of England, is under threat if this resource is fully exploited. The area is home to moose, wolves, bears and countless other vulnerable animals and plants. There are health implications from the water and air pollution for the people that live in the area too.

Out campaigning on the streets of Islington the other day, one passer by said, 'Does any of this make any difference? 'Does BP even know about any of this?' Of course I answered in the affirmative, but I'll let you in to a secret - I do sometimes wonder!

Islington sends a message to BP

On Sunday our activists went out on the streets of Islington to ask local residents what they thought of BP. There was little doubting one woman’s feelings when she said: “I think it’s disgusting!”

Tar sands campaigning fun in Stoke Newington!

Islington BP campaigning3Last Saturday (15th May) the Islington group - along with friends from the Bethnal Green and Walthamstow Greenpeace groups - was to be found campaigning on Stoke Newington Church Street.  We were out and about campaigning about tar sands - raising awareness of the threat that extracting oil from tar sands poses to the environment and, in particular, to let members of the public know about BP's plans to extract oil from the tar sands in northern Alberta, Canada.

Airplot Fort exhibition comes to the South Bank

You may remember a while back Greenpeace launched a competition to design a fort to protect our Airplot in Sipson. In June there will be an exhibition displaying some of the winning designs on the South Bank.
