What you can do
About the blog
The news stories of old have been replaced by a blog, which is where we'll be posting all of our updates, action alerts, thoughts and ideas in future. Because we didn't want to throw away all the news stories we've written over the years, we've archived many of them in the blog for reference - but, from now on, entries will be quite different from the old stories.
What's a blog?
A blog - or web log - is a publishing platform with a few differences to the more traditional platform we used on the old site. For example, you’ll be able to see who wrote what and to comment on what you read. The writing is more open and personal, and entries are published in reverse chronological order (the newest stories appear at the top). See Wikipedia for more on the history and impact of blogs.
Why are we blogging?
As well as fitting well into Greenpeace’s core values of openness and accountability, the blog is an important step towards building what we hope will become a thriving community of online campaigners. We rely on individuals who support us in everything we do and we need your help now more than ever before. The Earth really is in crisis, and we need to act quickly to stop it from becoming a catastrophe.
Whether it’s writing to KFC to stop them trashing the Amazon or spreading the word about decentralised energy, your actions are absolutely key to our online campaigning. We’re hoping the new website in general and the blog in particular will allow you to campaign more easily and more effectively.
Commenting
You'll also be able to comment on what you read - actually, we're relying on you to! While we do read every comment, we can't promise to reply to each one so, if you see a comment going unanswered, please feel free to jump in yourself. To comment, please make sure you've registered and have read our house rules.
Meet the bloggers
Hopefully, you'll get to know our individual bloggers over time but here's a quick introduction: Bex writes on climate, energy and nuclear power; Jamie writes about forests and GM food; Joss writes on oceans and toxics and Tracy writes about peace and disarmament.
Finding your way around
The main blog page lists every blog story in reverse chronological order. Only the first couple of paragraphs will be shown on this page - to read more, click on the story title or on the read more link.
Running down the right hand side of the page, you'll see a series of blocks relating to the blog. Below the introduction, there's a list of recent entries, which, as you'd expect, just displays the most recent entries in reverse chronological order. Below that is the archive, which archives all blogs by month. Then there's what we've read - every time we read a story we think you might be interested in, we'll add it to that block. Finally, there's a box called "blogroll", which links to the blogs we like.
