Tar Sands Campaign in Southwark

Our group has been involved in collecting signatures and messages to deliver to BP in July. So far we have done 2 actions in Dulwich market, and two common actions with other groups in Herne Hill and The Castle Climbing centre

Our No Tar Sands Campaign

Over the last few weeks we've been out on the street with our Behind the Logo campaign to stop BP being irresponsible towards the environment and reveal what actually goes on with the company that positions themselves as nice and green with their sunflower logo.

We've done a stall at Dulwich Market on the 5th and one (during which we were also helped by 2 volunteers from the Camden group of Greenpeace) at Castle (the climbing centre in North London) on the 13th. We got many people to sign letters to BP and write their messages on the NO TAR SANDS posters and just gave out information about how irresponsible BP is being at the moment.

Nestle Palm Oil Campaign.

Southwark has been having a busy time of late... This month sees the campaign to shine the light on the unsustainable exploitation of virgin rainforest for the produciton of palm oil reach its peak. Following direct action against Nestle and a visit to their headquarters in Croydon by Greenpeace and a large number of orang utans, local groups have been campaigning on the streets to inform the public of the goings-on and to invite people to send their own message directly to Nestle (and to think twice about their favourite chocolate bars).
Last week we were in Peckham outside the Peckham Power fair and this week again, we'll be at North Cross Road market in East Dulwich.

Happy Birthday to us: Greenpeace in Southwark is one year old!

Sitting here at some indeterminate point up a fairly long and steep learning curve, I thought it would be a good point from which to look back – as well as to try and answer one of the most frequent questions we get asked by potential visitors to the group: What do you actually do?

We held our first group meeting in East Dulwich just one year ago – not knowing who or what might show up. Since then, we’ve continued to meet every month (bar August) and here is a summary of what we’ve ‘done’ over the year:

•   We held 10 street ‘events’ – stands, mostly on North Cross Rd and also in Dulwich Park, engaging with the public, asking them to sign cards, draw pictures, make hand-prints in coal dust, connecting shopping on a Saturday morning to national and international events and the planes flying overhead;

•   We got to meet, lobby and hand over some hundred-plus cards, signed by members of the public to Tessa Jowell, asking her and the Government to reconsider their position on the Third Runway;

•   We planted two trees in a school allotment in Sydenham, along with the Mayor of Lewisham, and two prospective parliamentary candidates for the constituency;

•   We went along as part of a Greenpeace presence to the Mili-band protest at Kingsnorth, the action to protest against the trials of the ‘Tokyo Two’ at the Japanese Embassy, to visit and man the Rainbow Warrior during her visit in November and on the Wave climate march in December;

•   We showed up as a presence at the Lambeth Show, the New Economics Forum, an event for schools at the Barbican and Peckham Transition Town;

•   Kate recycled her house and invited the world and Upper Sydneham to come and see it;

•   But yes, most impressively, our fabulous group pulled out all the stops and organised a public meeting and screening of The Age of Stupid in East Dulwich in September, complete with stunning Indian food conjoured up by Kate and Mahesh. Oh yes, we also showed the Greenpeace activist film, A time Comes, invited local environmental speaker Donnachadh McCarthy - and raised over £400, which was an unintentional bonus.

To be really personal, in a way I think out of all of that amazing year, my favourite was going to see Kate’s recycled house and being inspired by people putting their values simply and beautifully into practice. Over the year, I’ve found I sometimes got lost in the practicalities of just sustaining ourselves as a group losing sight of what we’re actually here for… which in my view is to engage with each other and the wider public to share our practical vision of a world in balance, to speak and act out against environmental – and that encompasses all beings – injustice and crime. How we live from day to day is our immediate response to that question, so thanks, Kate, for sharing your way of doing it!

Then a huge welcome to those of you’ve who’ve joined since or because of that event in September, with the pool of talent and enthusiasm you’ve brought to the group, and WELCOME always to those of you who might still be thinking about coming along. There’s no shortage of issues to take on or campaigns to get involved with and for starters, that means the on-going Airplot campaign to halt the growth of aviation in the U.K. and stop the Third Runway, the potential extinction of blue-fin tuna through over-fishing, deforestation and the destruction of pristine landscape for the extraction of oil from the tar sands in Alberta.

As those campaigns kick off, we’ve also invited Donnachadh McCarthy to come and speak at February’s meeting to give more of the perspective from and within Southwark and South London.

And so, Welcome too, to 2010! What happens next is up to all of you, all of us and all of you yet to join……!

Christmas in jail for Climate Activists in Copenhagen - help now!

I know your thoughts are likely on the coming holiday, but we need your help now.

Fourof our activists face Christmas in jail over charges relating to apeaceful protest at the Heads of State dinner at the Copenhagen climatesummit.

We're calling for the immediate release of the activists - please help us by writing to the Danish Embassy today.

Theactivists joined Heads of State from over 120 countries en route to thebanquet at the Danish Parliament. They arrived in a three-vehicleconvoy and stepped out onto the red carpet as representatives of themillions of people around the world who wanted a fair, ambitious andlegally binding treaty to head-off climate catastrophe.

Theyheld up banners reading: "Politicians Talk, Leaders Act", and demandedaction, not just words from Presidents and Prime Ministers during theirFriday session of the climate summit.

Whilethe political leaders who are the perpetrators of real crime inCopenhagen have now fled the country on private jets, the Danishauthorities decided to detain, without trial, four peaceful protestersover Christmas.

Theirfamilies will spend a bleak festive season knowing that their lovedones will be languishing in isolation for acting to save the climate.For standing up in defense of the hundreds of millions of people andcountless species which will be severely affected by catastrophicclimate change.

Thefour activists - Juantxo, Joris, Nora, and Christian - were willing torisk jail time to do something about climate change and look forward topresenting their arguments in court. But keeping them apart from theirfamilies and loved ones over Christmas and New Year is both inhumaneand out of all proportion to what they did.

Now they need your help. Please take a few minutes to write to the Danish Ambassador requesting their immediate release. Thank you for your support.

Tree Planting at Kelvin Grove School in Sydenham

"Sydenham today became "twinned" with Sipson, the village threatened with demolition if the proposed third runway at Heathrow airport goes ahead." So the press release goes....

It wasApple Tree - Airplot a bit of a nippy do this morning when a few of us got together on the allotment of Kate Shipp's daughter's school in Sydenham - joined by the Mayor of Lewisham, Steve Bullock, along with Liberal Democrat and Conservative parliamentary candidates for Lewisham West and Penge, Alex Feakes and Chris Phillips - where the tree was planted in solidarity with Sipson. In fact, two trees, as we had to split the ceremony in two in order to accommodate the diffferent schedules of Mayor and politicians. In the event there was only room for one tree on the site, so there was much convincing man-handling of shovels and re-shovelling of dirt by said politicians. The other tree was left to be planted next week in the school garden behind the building.

The ceremony followed a similar event earlier this month when celebrities and politicians planted an apple orchard on the runway site as a symbol of opposition to the development. Over the past two weekends, Greenpeace groups around the country have been planting apple trees locally in a co-ordinated gesture of support - if you didn't know that bit already.

The whole thing was good on several fronts: it achieved what it set out to achieve, I think; it tied in really well with a school who are incredibly supportive and pro-active on ecological issues - and which is attended by Kate's daughter; it gave Greenpeace Southwark, the issue of Heathrow expansion and some local politicians some press coverage and media exposure (we had one official photographer from the South London Press group); it built another important link between all those groups and the local community - etc. etc.

The kids at the school manage and garden their own allotment, so in a few years will hopefully regularly get to eat crops of apples into the bargain. Thanks Kelvin Grove School and thanks Kate for having that idea and following it through!

The current phase of the Airplot campaign to put and end to the Government's plans for Heathrow (and other) Airport expansion reaches it's final crescendo this weekend with the planting of apple trees throughout the country.
Apple orchards originally covered the site of the proposed third runway and the area is the home of the Cox's Apple - thus the significance of trees in general and particularly of this one strain.

Southwark have organised a tree planting event for Saturday, November 28th at Kelvin Grove School in Upper Sydneham, complete with prospective Liberal Democrat candidate, Alex Feakes and the Mayor of Lewisham. Events kick off at 12.00 with the Mayor and the press, parents, kids and US, Southwark! Question remains over arrival time of Lib Dem. Keep checking in for more information later in the week! We may need to do it as two short ceremonies, one at 12.00, one at 1.00.

Coal

The fight to resist Government plans for a new generation of coal-fired power stations continues, in spite of the recent shelving of the proposals for Kingsnorth (in Kent) by E.On.
Kate, Mahesh, Yvonne and Roisin kicked off our part of the campaign by being out on the streets in East Dulwich and at the New Economics Forum, inviting members of the public to send a special direct message to Ed Miliband, written in charcoal, letting him know why they feel coal-fired power is not the answer - even with supposed 'clean coal' technolgy (yet to be commercially tried).
Alan finally got to dress as a polar bear and amused kids as part of a Greenpeace presence at the recent Envision environmental workshops in The Museum of London.
Keep watching this space into the New Year as the campaign continues. We will be out on the streets in East Dulwich again on December 12th.
